The arrival of international tourists to the Region increases by 12.3 percent over the previous year

The growth rate of foreign tourism from January to May exceeds by almost a point to that registered in the whole of Spain

A total of 346,082 foreign tourists have traveled to the Region of Murcia in the first five months of the year, 12.3 percent more than in the same period of the previous year, that is, 38.036 more tourists, according to data from the Survey Frontur Of the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In this same period, the number of tourists who visited Spain increased by 11.6 percent, so that the Region surpasses in almost a point to the one registered in the whole of the country and is placed like the seventh community with a greater increase, surpassing The growth rate of some of the main tourist communities: Catalonia (10.5 percent), Andalusia (9.6 percent), Canary Islands (9.6 percent) and Balearics (8.8 percent).

The director general of the Tourism Institute, Manuel Fernández-Delgado, said that "among the reasons that have contributed to these good results is the enhancement of the large seasonal products of the Region outside Spain such as religious, nautical or golf , Active and nature.

In addition, a new international operation has been launched from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Environment, which will include 15 programs in nine countries related to sun and beach, golf and senior tourism products: three in the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic;

Two in Sweden and Bulgaria;

And one in France, Portugal, Denmark, Finland and Holland.

Together, these operations are expected to bring to the Region 22,000 tourists that will generate a total of 120,000 overnight stays.

In May, according to the same source, the Region received 64,167 foreign tourists, 1,902 more tourists than in the same month of 2016, representing a year-on-year growth of 3.1 percent.

The main access route of the international tourists to the Region of Murcia were the airports, with a quota of 85 percent on the total.

The means of transport by road were the entry route of 12.6 percent of foreign tourists.

Spain received 7.9 million international tourists in May, 11.7 percent more than in the same month of 2016.

Main Markets

In the first five months of 2017, the United Kingdom was the main country issuing foreign tourism to the Region, with 148,374 tourists, accounting for 42.9 percent of the total and an increase of 23.1 percent.

France is the second with 47,879 tourists, 18 percent more than in 2016, and a share of 13.8 percent.

The Nordic countries were the third market, with 36,376 tourists, an increase of 67.7 percent and a weight of 10.5 percent.

Belgium was the fourth market to the Region with 23,026 tourists, almost double that in 2016, and a weight of 6.7 percent.

Germany ranked as the fifth issuing market with 22,514 tourists and a share of 6.5 percent.

The sixth in the ranking is Ireland with 19,527 tourists and a share of 5.6 percent, followed by the Netherlands, with 2.7 percent, and Italy, with 2.1 percent.
