Discovered imitations of Murcia al Vino cheese is unfairly competing in foreign markets

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

The general director Adolfo Falagas, calls this initiative "unwise and disrespectful" and stresses that it has submitted the required report to the Ministry Bouquet

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water has discovered imitations of the Protected Designation of Origin 'Queso de Murcia al Vino' is unfairly competing in European and U.S. markets.

The director general of Livestock and Fisheries, which in turn chairs the Regulatory Council of Protected Names 'Queso de Murcia' and 'Queso de Murcia al Vino', Adolfo Falagas, has called this initiative "unwise and disrespectful" and stresses that it has submitted the required report to the Ministry.

According Falagas, several Spanish dairies have recognized the great success in the market for our 'Queso de Murcia al Vino', as he says, "have copied our methods of preparation and were marketing the product with the same name."

The general director said that this incident was reported and that "as we have patented brand of Murcia, have had to remove the labels."

However, he adds, "as the words' cheese ',' goat 'and' wine 'are generic and can not be patented or protected, these companies continue to market its product in the shadow of our Denomination of Origin as' Goat Cheese the Wine. "

Responsible autonomy considered "unfair business initiative because, he says," this product does not pass the same tests as the true 'Queso de Murcia al Vino "which is what really has achieved success in different markets."

Moreover, he adds, "companies have not respected our imitators rural development initiative, which consists in recovering the craft production of our 'Cheese Wine', getting a quality product and helping to ensure that what was once a farming marginal today are likely to be increasingly profitable. "

Traditional production

Queso de Murcia al Vino is current as Falagas, the recovery of a tradition "unique in the world", which had been lost, and that is mature goat cheese soaking in red wine from the region.

In 2001 this cheese got its final score as Protected Designation of Origin, published in the Official Gazette of the European Communities.

In recent years, adds Falagas, "has won a lot of market share because of its recognized quality and especially because cheese is controlled by a Control Board."

Is required to make this cheese goat milk Murcia-Granada, "a kind well known throughout the world," says Falagan.

It is also required that livestock being exploited in the Region of Murcia.

Its success was enhanced after being exported to Europe and the U.S..

According Falagas, "today is by far the most goat cheese is exported to Spain."

Of the 17 dairies that are currently in the Region of Murcia, 8 produced mostly pure goat cheese and belong to that appellation.

Del 'Murcia al Vino Cheese' are marketed each year some 300,000 kilos, of which 74 percent is exported, mainly to the United States and European countries like Germany and France.

Adolfo Falagan finally says that the cheese is also gradually increasing its production (about 35,000 kilos per year) and sales.

51 percent is exported.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water and the Control Board are promoting these cheeses with denomination of origin in various forums such as contests and exhibitions of national and international food, and hospitality schools, universities and women, through tastings.
